Tom Dixon

Tom rose to prominence in the mid 1980′s as “the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture”. He set up ‘Space’ as a creative think-tank and shop front for himself and other young designers. By the late 1980′s, he was working for the Italian giant Cappellini for whom he designed the Iconic ‘S’ chair. In the 1990′s, he became a household name and Jack, his polypropylene “sitting, stacking, lighting thing” designed for his own company ‘Eurolounge’ was a symbol of the age.

Tom Dixon was appointed head of design by Habitat in 1998 and later became Creative Director until 2008. He was the public face of a collective team responsible for rejuvenating the Habitat brand, maintaining Terence Conran’s dream of enriching everyday life through simple, modern design and creating a shopping experience that is theatrical and intimate.

In 2000, Tom’s work was recognised by the award of an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen.

Tom’s works have been acquired by the world’s most famous museums and are now in permanent collections across the globe including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Museums of Modern Art New York and Tokyo and Centre Beaubourg (Pompidou),

Since setting up his own eponymous design company in 2002, Dixon’s work has become even more prominent. The Tom Dixon brand gave Tom a platform to produce iconic designs such as Mirror Ball, Copper Shade, Wingback chair and Beat light. The company now sells in 61 countries with permanent set-ups in England, America and Hong Kong.

TOM DIXON LIGHTING

BEAT LIGHTS
A pendant light inspired by the sculptural simplicity of brass cooking pots and traditional water vessels on the subcontinent. Beat Lights are spun and hand-beaten by renowned skilled craftsmen of Moradabad in Northern India. Made from brass with a black external lacquer. The Beat collection is available in 4 variations – Tall, Fat, Wide & Stout.

MIRROR BALL
A highly reflective shade inspired by the space helmet. The Mirror Ball is created by exploding a thin layer of pure metal onto the internal surface of a polycarbonate globe. This has become one of the most iconic products in the collection. The Mirror Ball is available in 40cm and 25cm size and can be used as a floor or pendant version.

VOID
Void is a pendant light referencing the Olympic medals – Bronze, Silver & Gold. Solid copper sheets are pressed, spun and brazed to form a double wall shade. The double walls reflect and soften the light emitted from a concealed halogen bulb. This mysterious lighting object is hand polished to create a mirrored surface which is then lacquered to maintain a high gloss finish. Void is available in polished Stainless Steel, Copper and Brass.

JACK
The award winning ‘sitting, stacking, lighting thing’. Jack is a multi-functional object made from plastic and uses the process of rotary moulding. First launched in 1994, Jack was designed and produced to promote industrial manufacturing in the UK. Available in black or white.
